Hot Honey Garlic Butter Shrimp Tacos

Sweet, Spicy, Garlicky Shrimp in Warm, Buttery Tortillas

I made these for the first time on a Wednesday night with a bag of frozen shrimp and very little plan, and they have been in the regular rotation ever since. The hot honey garlic butter glaze takes about three minutes and does most of the heavy lifting – sweet, sticky, and just spicy enough without being the kind of thing that clears the room. The jalapeño-lime crema and the crunchy slaw keep everything balanced. Twenty-five minutes, one pan, genuinely one of my favorite quick dinners.

Why This Recipe Works

Garlic Butter Shrimp = Max Flavor – The shrimp is lightly seared in butter, then tossed in a sticky, sweet-spicy glaze.
Crispy & Buttery Tortillas – The tortillas are pan-toasted in butter, making them slightly crispy yet soft.
Hot Honey = Sweet Heat Perfection – The sweet honey + fiery chili combo coats the shrimp like magic.
Cool, Crunchy ContrastSlaw, avocado, and jalapeño-lime crema balance the heat with fresh, creamy, and tangy elements.

Ingredients

For the Shrimp:

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp hot honey (or mix 1 tbsp honey + ½ tsp hot sauce!)
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce (adds umami depth!)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat!)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Juice of ½ lime

For the Slaw & Toppings:

  • 2 cups shredded cabbage (green or purple)
  • ¼ cup red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 small avocado, sliced
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Juice of ½ lime
  • ¼ tsp salt

For the Jalapeño-Lime Crema:

  • ½ cup sour cream or Greek yogurt
  • 1 jalapeño, minced
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • 1 tsp honey
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp salt

For the Tortillas:

  • 8 small corn or flour tortillas
  • 2 tbsp butter (for pan-toasting!)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Make the Jalapeño-Lime Crema

  1. In a small bowl, mix sour cream, minced jalapeño, lime juice, honey, garlic powder, and salt.
  2. Stir until smooth and refrigerate while you prep everything else.

Step 2: Prep the Slaw & Avocado

  1. In a mixing bowl, toss shredded cabbage, red onion, olive oil, lime juice, and salt.
  2. Slice avocado and set aside.

💡 Pro Tip: For a mild slaw, let it sit for 5-10 minutes to soften the cabbage.

Step 3: Cook the Hot Honey Garlic Butter Shrimp

  1. Pat shrimp dry with paper towels to help them sear properly.
  2. Heat butter and olive oil in a pan over medium-high heat.
  3. Add garlic, smoked paprika, cayenne, black pepper, and salt, stirring until fragrant (30 seconds).
  4. Add shrimp and sear for 1-2 minutes per side, until lightly crispy.
  5. Reduce heat to low, add hot honey, soy sauce, and lime juice, and toss to coat.
  6. Cook for another 1-2 minutes, letting the glaze thicken slightly.

Now, taste and adjust! Want more spice? Add extra hot honey or cayenne!

Step 4: Toast the Tortillas

  1. Heat 1 tbsp butter in a pan over medium heat.
  2. Toast each tortilla for 30 seconds per side, until lightly golden.
  3. Remove and keep warm under a kitchen towel.

Pro Tip: Press tortillas down gently for a slight crispiness!

Step 5: Assemble the Tacos & Serve!

  1. Spoon the hot honey shrimp into each tortilla.
  2. Top with slaw, avocado slices, and a drizzle of jalapeño-lime crema.
  3. Garnish with extra lime wedges and chopped cilantro.

Now grab a taco and enjoy that perfect balance of crispy, buttery, spicy, and creamy!

FAQs

Can I use frozen shrimp?

Absolutely – that’s usually what I use. Thaw them fully first, either overnight in the fridge or under cold running water for about 10 minutes, then pat them dry before they go in the pan. Wet shrimp steam instead of sear and you lose those caramelized edges that make the glaze cling.

How spicy are these?

Warmly spicy rather than blow-your-head-off spicy. The hot honey brings heat in the background and the crema cools things down. If you want more of a kick, add the cayenne and an extra hit of hot sauce. If you’re cooking for people who don’t do spice at all, regular honey works fine and the garlic butter still carries the flavor.

Can I make any of this ahead?

The crema is actually better made the day before – it sits in the fridge and the flavors come together nicely. The slaw can be prepped ahead but dress it just before serving or it goes soggy. The shrimp are genuinely best cooked fresh – they take under five minutes so it’s worth doing them at the last minute.

What tortillas work best?

Small corn tortillas are my go-to – they hold up to the saucy shrimp without falling apart and the flavor works well with the glaze. Flour tortillas are fine if that’s what you have. Either way, toast them in a dry pan first. It takes 30 seconds and makes them taste much better.

Can I use a different protein?

Yes – the glaze works on salmon, chicken strips, and halloumi if you want a vegetarian version. Salmon needs about 3 to 4 minutes per side, chicken strips around 6 to 8 minutes. Same method, same glaze, different dinner.

What can I serve alongside?

Honestly these are a full meal on their own. If I’m feeding more people I’ll put out some cowboy caviar or grilled corn alongside and that’s usually more than enough.

A protein-packed, flavor-loaded meal that’s totally worth every bite!
