Onions are often relegated to supporting roles in dishes, but this Air-Fried Onion Boil proves that they can shine as the star ingredient. Taking inspiration from the viral TikTok onion boil, this version swaps boiling for air-frying, creating a deliciously caramelized and tender onion with crispy, golden edges. The process enhances the onion’s natural sweetness while still allowing it to soak up a rich, garlicky butter sauce.
Peel the onion, leaving the root intact so it holds together.
Using a sharp knife, cut an “X” on the top of the onion, slicing about halfway down. This helps it cook evenly and soak up the flavors.
Season & Air-Fry
Drizzle the onion with olive oil (or melted butter) and rub it all over to coat.
Sprinkle Old Bay, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper over the top and into the cuts.
Place the onion in the air fryer basket, root side down.
Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 20-25 minutes, until the outer layers are golden and crispy, and the inside is soft and tender.
💡 Pro Tip: If the onion is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with foil for the last 5-7 minutes.
Prepare the Garlic Butter Sauce
While the onion is air-frying, melt 2 tbsp of butter in a small pan over low heat.
Add minced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly until fragrant.
Assemble & Serve
Remove the onion from the air fryer and place it on a serving plate.
Drizzle generously with the garlic butter sauce and squeeze fresh lemon juice over the top.
Garnish with chopped parsley for a fresh finish.
Serve immediately while warm! The onion will be soft on the inside with a delicious golden crust on the outside.
